Ever since I’ve started this experimentation with plant-based dietary guidelines, I’ve been investigating a handful of individuals that produce a certain niche within the plant-based lifestyle that is personal to their individual lives. Here are my top five and why I love what their producing:
I mentioned the Rich Roll podcast in my last blog about my diet change. He and his wife Julie (@srimati on Instagram) have built a community surrounded by unconditional positivity and the way plants heal our bodies and the world. Rich went through an enormous transformation from alcoholic lawyer, hating his job, to full-on vegan athlete. He incorporated yoga, where he met his wife, and he wrote his best selling book Finding Ultra conveying the trials of his evolution. They now both operate a plant-based meal planning business, have three cookbooks on the market and conduct international travel retreats based around enlightening the mind, exercise and cooking.
When I started looking up restaurants that had vegan options, this particular instagram popped up all about Las Vegas vegan eats, aptly named VEGANSBABY! From what I gather on her Instagram she is a one woman show, basically giving you all the info on happy hours, restaurants with plant-based options and vegan-centric dining options. She mentions various places in Las Vegas on the strip, off-strip, in the suburbs and downtown Vegas. I have tried a handful of places so far: Vegenation, Evel Pie (vegan pizza option) Tacos & Beer, Greens & Proteins and PublicUs. Seriously, what a great help to someone who still wants to dine out without sounding super needy about meals.
You know what happens when you follow a page on Instagram and fifty other pages pop up in the “you might like this!” manner, well then your stuck in the link vortex that we all get caught up in in every network site. Not always a bad thing, since I discover great content that Instagram’s smart algorythm suggests: SUCH AS… Vegan Fat Kid (@veganfatkid) is an Australian gentlemen who resides in Los Angeles and mainly posts gorgeous vegan food photos throughout LA and daily workout stories. No, not posing with glamour muscles. Actual workouts, containing reps, sets and what muscle group and why. DAILY. So, you know this dude is committed and wants to share purely to motivate. Not sure of his actual name, but Veganfatkid is also the founder of TrainVegan, workout and training gear.
Yes, I have a wrestler on here! So, I had no idea who this guy was when he was in the WWE, only that he was in the cruiserweight division. When I started to follow the wrestling business more closely, Aries went to Impact wrestling where he currently is the reigning Impact World Champion. While exploring vegan athletes, like Rich Roll, Austin Aries came up. He also happens to know the gal who runs Vegansbaby. I mean, they were both hanging out at Drai’s Beach Club sampling all the vegan eats.. like, WHAT?! Invite me! So, in between training, wrestling, traveling and being the champion, Austin Aries has just published his book called Food Fight: My Plant Powered Journey from Bingo Halls to the Big Time.
Last, but certainly not least, Natalie Slater is the Chicago based BAMF innovator behind Bake & Destroy: Good Food for Bad Vegans. I discovered her a loooong time ago in college looking for a chai tea muffin recipe, and her vegan version popped up in Google. It was super easy. Fast forward to now, I have re-discovered her on my mission to be purely plant-based. I love her style, she’s covered in tattoos, has this cute Betty Page look and is a super-fan of wrestling (she dated CM Punk before he was CM Punk.. what?!) aside from her amazing cookbook that is chalked full of vegan baked goods, comfort foods and entertaining snacks she has all the knowledge on where to get fantastic plant-based food in the metropolis of the midwest, Chicago!
