We’re going to break down our fashionable, yet hedonistic high schoolers of E4’s Skins one by one. Ever since a friend told me about the show, I binge watched every season while I was in college, and thats “university” in America. Along with angsty drama and dark humor that carry most storylines of this show, there is a whole stylistic element that is to be observed. What I love about the show is that each episode is broken down to focus on one key character IN DEPTH: their flaws, their origins and their purpose.
The depth of the character development is also deeply outlined in their personal style. Those who aren’t familiar with the show should know that this was cast with actual high school aged teenagers 14-18 years old. After two seasons, the current cast signs off with a finale that denotes their graduation, plans for the future, and whether they will leave their hometown of Bristol for London, the USA, or beyond. Thus, the next “season” we usher is a new cohort of teens that will carry on their own circle of drama, sexual experimentation, mental health and the allure of mind alteration… and well, epic Skins parties.
And each group gets more and more complex in their identity as well as their style. Seriously, who is in the wardrobe department? So let’s break down the troubled ladies of the first season of Skins, beginning with the romantic existential darling: Cassie Ainsworth.
She’s waif thin, she’s blonde and she says “wow” a LOT. We are talking about the oh so lovely Cassie who had her own beautiful mess of problems. As the romantic Green Fairy of the group, Cassie is hardly the damsel in distress. Her whimsical style is reminiscent of 1920s, Easter Sunday best, Lolita with a hint of 80s. Her long strawberry blonde hair can be seen wavy, crimped or generally a mess from partying the night before. Cassie is unfortunately the “manic pixie dream girl” of the bunch plagued with anorexia. She and Sid never seemed to never get their timing right, despite our hopes. However, we still love all of her offbeat accessories which include: digital watch anklets, keychain brooches and bird barettes.
Skins Season 1
Cassie remains a mystery… but always shows her personality in her style: midi skirts paired with graphic tees, knee socks, glittery tights and complete the look with oxfords or loafers.
